Lower Ninth Ward, LA
Real Estate

As its name implies, the Lower 9th Ward sits lower or down from the rest of New Orleans. This neighborhood became nationally famous after the devastation from Hurricane Katrina, but equal attention should be paid to the rebuilding efforts in this area! Local volunteers led by Brad Pitt rebuilt New Orleans-style homes here, and today, this is a great place to call home.

The Lower 9th is also famous for a few very special buildings. The US Army built the Jackson Barracks in 1834, and this building that still stands today provided supplies for every American war in history. Slightly younger are the Doullut steamboat houses located on Egania Street in the Holy Cross section of town. These marvelous homes were built by riverboat captain Milton P. Doullut in 1907 and 1913 and are attractions to locals and tourists alike.

Divided into three main thoroughfares: St. Claude, Florida and Claiborne Avenues, this is where most of the action in the Lower 9th Ward can be found! With classic NOLA restaurants like Cafe Dauphine and newcomers like N7, a hip French restaurant and bar, the Lower 9th is both timeless and progressive.

Revitalization efforts continue to this day with new houses being built each year. You'll find similar efforts with the school system where your children can attend charter schools in the Recovery School District. If you're looking for a classic New Orleans experience that packs a bang for your buck, the Lower 9th Ward is a fantastic place to find your dream home!
